Strathdon - Year Round Holidays

Pooldhulie Bridge, Strathdon Upper Strathdon Strathdon Lodges

Strathdon lies 40 miles due west of Aberdeen on the banks of the River Don, and is a natural gateway to the spectacular Cairngorms National Park. Narrower and more intimate than the better known straths of Deeside to the South and Strathspey to the North, the glen exhibits a widely varying landscape from the high bare mountains beyond Corgarff through picturesque woods and hills down to the fertile valley of Alford.

Rich in scenic beauty and places of interest, Upper Donside offers a very special holiday for the discerning visitor. A wealth of outdoor activities are available in our unspoilt natural spaces, or you can explore our castles, gardens and museums and watch the wildlife. If you are lucky you may see Ospreys fishing the Don, while buzzards and eagles are a familiar sight in our skies. Roe and red deer are widespread and herons and otters may be seen in the river.

Whatever time of the year you come there will always be things to see and do.

In the winter when Ptarmigan and hares turn white with the first snows you can enjoy downhill skiing or snowboarding at the Lecht or explore the forests and hills on cross country skis.

In Spring the lambs are born as the river fills with snowmelt, wild flowers appear, castles and gardens open and fishing for salmon and brown trout begins.

High Summer brings endless light nights with the 'midnight sun' and gardens and nature in full bloom. Enjoy long days out on the hills, tour the Cairngorms National Park or just drift through lazy days on the verandah of your lodge watching the wildlife go by. At the end of August there is the world famous Lonach Gathering - right in front of your lodge. Gardens are in full bloom.

Towards the end of the year the heather clouds the hills in purple, the woods begin to take on their Autumn splendour and the smell of woodsmoke hangs on the air. This can be a very special time in Strathdon, with gin-clear air and fine days as Summer hangs on for a while longer.

Whichever time of the year you come, you can be sure of a welcome and a luxurious base for your holiday in our brand new woodland lodges.
