Birdwatching

Golden eagle

Eagles and Buzzards are seen regularly soaring over Strathdon, and Ospreys are seen in the area from time to time raiding the fishing ponds. You may even be lucky enough to see a rare and elusive Capercaillie high in the pine forests.

Lower down there is an abundance of smaller birds like siskins and tree creepers, while out on the open moors you can see small raptors such as the merlin, plus the ubiquitous grouse, plovers etc.

Wildlife in Strathdon

In the forest immediately behind the lodges you are likely to see roe deer. Down by the River Don you may catch glimpses of otters, and if out on the open hillside keep an eye open for our large mountain hares and of course the majestic red deer.
